Thankgod of Ovwian Community Burnt to Death Over Alleged Debt Dispute
A tragic incident of mob violence has rocked the Ovwian community in Udu Local Government Area of Delta State, where a young man identified as Thankgod was brutally killed on March 31, 2025. According to civil rights leader Comr. Israel Joe, Thankgod was lured to Obus Layout in Utuama under the pretense of negotiating a financial settlement, only to be falsely accused of theft, beaten mercilessly by a mob, and ultimately burnt to death.
The incident reportedly stemmed from a monetary dispute between Thankgod and individuals he had financial dealings with. Comr. Israel Joe, who has been closely following the case, revealed that the perpetrators tricked Thankgod into meeting them to discuss repayment of a debt. Upon his arrival, they raised a false alarm, accusing him of attempting to steal a car. This accusation incited a mob to attack Thankgod, leading to his gruesome death. āThey beat him up mercilessly with mob as well, and burnt him to death,ā Joe stated in a post on social media, expressing outrage at the brutality of the act.
He went further āOn April 1, 2025, I accompanied Thankgodās grieving family to the Ovwian/Aladja Divisional Police Office, where I interviewed his mother. Her pain was palpable as she wept uncontrollably, demanding justice for her son. āMy son was not a thief. They owed him money, and they killed him for it. I want justice,ā she cried, her voice trembling with grief. The Divisional Police Officer made strong promise to fish out the perpetrators of the gruesome and brutal crime.
